The Left Behind Novels

Post placeholder image

Has anyone out there read any of books in The Left Behind series? According to a recent Newsweek article, over 62 million of the books have been sold — but I’d never heard of them until now. Interestingly enough I picked up the first 8 books for a bargain price at a resale shop and was wondering if I should try and read them or just sell on EBay.

Fred Clark, one of my favorite bloggers of faith over at Slacktivist, has been casting a rather critical eye on the series.

I checked them out from a writer/editor point of view and I thought they were very poorly written and I believe that they were published on a wave of interest in religion-based fiction. As someone interested in interpretations of the apocalypse, I have to say that I thought their take was uninspired and not challenging for the reader. And that was just on a quick glance-through while standing in the bookstore.
But I say read some b/c I’m looking forward to reading what you thought of them (at least what you thought of page 1)

Everything I have read about them suggests that they are absolutely terrible – bad prose, bad plotting, bad characters, internal inconsistencies, and a theology that, while giving people a second chance, suggests that “Christians” have no duty to their fellows but will be whisked away to heaven leaving the world to go to Hell behind them.
That said, read until you get bored, then stop.
Then go rent the Robert Duvall Movie _The Apostle_ and consider the differences.

Michael thanks for responding! It’s always good to hear from long time readers. In any event, perhaps I’ll give the first book a once over. I’m not a fan of doomsday type novels, but this one might prove to be a bit more interesting since it has a religious bend to it.

    Hi Ursula,
Long time reader, first time responder : -)
I’ve read the series, very interesting. I’m not a “religious” person by nature but found the story very interesting. I bought the books in pairs because the story sort of ends at one and picks right back up with the next book.
