On A Movie Binge
Since I got the new TV and DVD player, I’ve seen quite a few movies. They include: Mystic River, 50 First Dates, The Cooler, Johnson Family Vacation, In America, Thirteen, & Under The Tuscan Sun. Now waiting for: Fog of War, Manchurian Candidate and Hidalgo to show up from Blockbuster Online, which I signed up for late last week (I chose them because they were a little cheaper than Netflix, they have a distribution center close by and they give you coupons for free instore rentals). Now looking for suggestions on what to add to my queue – so anyone have any ideas? If so, fire away!

Oh man… the top ten DVDs you need to rent…
10. Night of the Hunter: Shelly Winters when she was young and beautiful, the first movie to put children in true peril, and possibly the best performance of Robert Mitchum’s career.
09. The Killing: Stanley Kubrick’s best film in my humble opinion.
08. State of Grace: Sean Penn shines in this film. Few men can play the hard caliber hero with such subtle vulnerability.
07. The Cooler: I think that William H. Macy is one of the most underrated actors working today.
06. Love Actually: I usually can’t stand estrogen festivals but this film is really sweet, funny and paints a pretty vivid picture of the trials and tribulations found on the path toward love of all sorts.
05. The Royal Tenenbaums: A really quirky, intelligent film by Wes Anderson with his now usual cast of character actors including Bill Murray, Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson, Gene Hackman and Angelica Houston.
04. Cold Mountain: Hated the book, loved the movie… go figure.
03. Lost in Translation: Sophia Coppola proves she is every bit as talented as her father.
02. American Splendor: Funny, sad, insightful, and an award winner at sundance.
01. Blood Simple: The film that turned me on to the Coen Brothers. This one is possibly the only film made after 1960 that can honestly live up to the label of Film Noir.

My stepson just loaned me Hidalgo, so maybe I’ll get to see it this week.
I just finished reading “Cold Mountain,” and I’m curious to see how they brought that to the screen. I’m not sure if it’s available on DVD yet.
I’ll have to visit to see what others have suggested.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind comes out a week from tommorow. Best movie of this year so far, IMHO.

“Fog of War” is fantastic. Errol Morris is a genius at turning what otherwise might be a dull topic into something dramatic and riveting. If you like it, you should check out his earlier film “The Thin Blue Line”.
