High Speed Access Here I Come
Thanks to my job (more on that later), I now have high speed internet access at home. However, there is something to be set for dial-up. In appears that it kept the worm virus at bay for months. I say this because about 15 minutes after cable modem was installed, my system kept shutting down. Upon consultation, was told that my computer was infected with the worm virus; it lay dormant for months. Luckily I was able to still connect via dial-up and download the Microsoft patch which took care of the problem. Now need to order the latest antivirus and firewall software. Considering how devastated I would be to loose any data from my pc, I’m starting to realize that it was cheap of me to let my anitvirus software become outdated. Now for all you fuckers out there writing this shit, knock it off!

I’ve used linksys routers for 3 years now with no failures. Here is a link to what I think you would need. You will also need wireless card for your laptop. Unless you want to run both at the same time you could get by with 1. Circuit City and Best Buy both sell linksys (as well as others). Here is link to router.

My new job will give me broadband access, too-and I am so pleased about that, I am so sick of dial-up modems crashing on me!

For a novice like myself, can either of you recommend a wireless router that has a built in hardware firewall? Do note that in addition to my own personal laptop, I’ll also have a company issued laptop.

Quick note to avoid offense given my use of the term up there: Not all warchalkers hack the computers they find…they just make it public that your computer is insecure…which makes it easier for the hacking chalkers to find you.

Just an addition to that…a router only does you good (especially a wireless one) if it also has a built-in hardware firewall. Most routers have one, but check the box…some cheaper models skip it.
If you’re doing wireless, given that you live in the city, you want to make sure to set it up with full encryption and every security measure you can think of. I have friends who warchalk, and it’s blissfully easy to do…and I think city folk are more likely to get hit because there’s more computers in a smaller amount of space, plus business computers that could have good stuff on them…makes it ripe for chalkers.

You might want to look into putting a router between your computer and the outside world. They are inexpensive ($80) and hide your computer/s better than just firewall software. If you’re laptopping you can look for a wireless router and then connect the laptop from anywhere in you place.
