High School Rings

Post placeholder image

Newsweek has a short article this week that talks about the growing number of home school students who are choosing to purchase high school rings. After finishing the article, couldn’t help but think that if I knew then what I know now, I wouldn’t have purchased one. Sure it’s a symbol of ones accomplish, but considering that they are so pricey and I stopped wearing mine about two years out of high school, if I had to do it over, I probably wouldn’t buy one. Of course, I didn’t really learn my lesson with the high school ring because after I graduated from Michigan I purchased a college ring. A couple years ago I stopped wearing that too. So maybe buying the rings are a right of passage. Every now and then, I put back on my college ring, but I can’t see myself wearing my high school ring again. For now, it’s tucked in my jewelry box collecting dust. Maybe if I went back to a high school reunion I’d pull it out again, then again, probably not.

Rings are good for beating people up with. Once when I was in Junior High some dumbass told this girl who wore a lot of rings to alternate the stone setting of the rings on her hand (e.g. forefinger ring’s stone up, middle finger’s stone towards the palm) so that she could punch someone and then slap someone and still get a good effect.
We WERE 13 years old though 🙂

I wore my high scholl ring one or two days then hung it on the arm a trophy. I think my wife has it in her jewelry now. Just was never that much for the ring thing. Guess its a blessing we were poor and I had to scramble for the $75 for the titanium ring.. 😉

I guess I’m the opposite side of the spectrum. 🙂 I’ve worn my high school class ring ever since I got it. I actually really regret not getting a college ring, and I’ve considered ordering one.
I also wore my grandmother’s high school class ring through most of high school and part of college. I accidentally lost it somewhere in my bedroom in Charleston, else I’d probably still be wearing it. Hers was really cool because it was simple and did not have a stone setting…it was made during or not long after the Depression. So, it had this cool history to it, and I loved wearing it. When I got mine, I designed it to be like hers.
So maybe someday your kids or grandkids will wear your high school and college rings, and then they will not be wasted…and they’ll tell their friends about how back in the day, the rings didn’t even have embedded storage chips, or whatever the latest thing is. 🙂
