Hairspray

I spent the evening with friends at the Ford Center/Oriental Theatre. We were there to see Hairspray production which is based on John Waters’ 1988 cult classic film. Story revolves about a chubby white girl who against the odds, gets a shot at dancing on the most popular TV show in Baltimore during the 1960s. Also, not only does she manage to win the heart of the cutest boy but she also manages to help integrate the show. Hey, a girl can dream right? In any event, the show was just fabulous! The set design and performances from the cast was totally first rate. Broadway has definitely come to Chicago. So if you’re here in Chicago, go check it out. If you’re not in Chicago, check the official website to see when national tour company will be in a city near you. Bruce Vilanch (who portrays Edna Turnbald) and rest of the cast did an amazing job. Now I can’t stop singing in my head: Good Morning Baltimore.

Harvey Fierstein won a Tony for his performance on Broadway. Thinking he’s still with the show. Bruce is just the lead for the touring company.

Having watched my fair share of Hollywood Squares I know the Bruce Vilanch is very funny. I didn’t know that he did song and dance however. I thought he reserved his humor for the Oscars.
