Blog Etiquette

There are a few blogs on my blogroll that haven’t updated in a few months. Wondering, what do others consider a reasonable amount of time before removing them? Ideally, I’d like to let them stay, but in that my blogroll serves as a recommendation list to others, would prefer not to send people to outdated blogs. I know I could do whatever I please as it’s my blog, but I’m curious to learn what others are doing when blogs on their list have not been updated.

I have emailed a few people who have been offline or weeks/months. However, it’s somewhat awkward. These bloggers don’t really owe me anything. And if they say they are taking a break and it goes on for months, then I’m still left to decide whether or not to remove them from my blogroll.

If a blog hasn’t been updated, does that mean that everything that written before, everything that you read that made you add them to your blogroll is invalid? just asking. Chances are something is going on in their lives (hopefully) that is more urgent that turning their thoughts in to digital fodder for the masses. If you really like them, drop ’em a line a find out what’s up.

Most folks that I’ve been reading for any length of time, I give a month. Those I know better than most typically get a bit more leeway, although I tend to be very inconsistent about it. (However, if a whole year goes by, it’s probably safe to say they’re done…)
Re: pinging — I only started doing it myself when a certain someone made it clear to me that it was a *good* thing and not so tough to do (although Blogger has since added an option for auto-pinging that I now use instead — I’ll stop babbling now…)

It depends on how much I really like the blog. If it’s a blog I have really enjoyed reading, then I’ll keep it around for 3 months before I take it off my list, but if it’s a blog that’s only occasionally great and they just drop off the face of the earth, I’ll give them a month.

i give them a month. i’ve given a few bloggers longer only because i “know” them. i’ve been cleaning mine up as late. some people have more than one and it’s getting all too confusing (and annoying).
there is a setting that let’s you show who has been updated recently. i used it all of 1 week. the big problem is that many blogs do not ping. here i was thinking no one was updating when they were.

One week. Seriously. If I notice someone hasn’t updated in 7 days, I kill them on my BlogRoll. I may drop them from my Favorites list as well.

Isn’t there a setting for blog rolls that lets you just show blogs that have been recently updated? If there isn’t there should be… that way you can keep them on the list but only appear when they are updated.
