I am so on the verge of turning off the comments feature for good. The spammers out there are totally getting out of hand. Goodness. I just got this email below as someone at IP 38.119.107.77 was trying to flood my blog with crazy spam comments. That fucker. To combat the problem, I’ll upgrade to the latest version of MT and set it up that only those authorized can comment. It’s either that or shutting comments down for good and I’m not ready to go there yet.

A visitor to your weblog Ursula’s Not So Secret History has automatically
been banned by posting more than the allowed number of comments in the last
200 seconds. This has been done to prevent a malicious script from
overwhelming your weblog with comments. The banned IP address is
38.119.107.77
If this was a mistake, you can unblock the IP address and allow the visitor
to post again by logging in to your Movable Type installation, going to
Weblog Config – IP Banning, and deleting the IP address 38.119.107.77 from
the list of banned addresses.

I do have MT-blacklist installed. The problem is that I don’t know how to update it. I had someone do it for me some months ago and so the list is somewhat outdated. But even if I did know, looking for a more permanent solution. That’s why I’m going to have my system upgraded to the latest version of MT and then insist that people have typekey to comment. I know some people will probably stop commenting because of that, but that’s the risk I’ll take. Blog spam has totally gotten out of control.

    e!

There are alternatives to blacklist. For what it is worth, MT Blacklist doesn’t really stop comment spam completely as stated in earlier comments. For the amount of work that is required to install it, you’d think people would expect the problem to go away.
If you do upgrade, you could always institute your commentors to get typekey.
So far, the best method I’ve found of stopping comment spam for MT 2.6x is to change the name of your comment script. I still get a few pieces of comment spam, but not nearly as many as I used to… now its down to 5 or 6 per month.

Until you upgrade, have you tried mt-blacklist? It does require a bit of work every now and then to keep the blacklist updated, and spam still slips through, but it did wonders to reduce all the poker/gambling/casion spam I was getting. No more having to delete 100+ comments at one go. You can find it here.

They’ll just change the IP address and be at it again.
Just wait til you upgrade. I want to be able to tell you that it solves all the problems. It does solve the problem of these comments getting on the site, but you have to spend your precious time deleting the emails and the comments. And for what? What are these people hoping to gain? Surely not a single blogger or blog commenter is going to follow these links. Right?
