Bed Frame Drama

So my shipment from America arrived today and except for a few framed prints, everything came in excellent condition. Only problem is that my US queen size bed frame won’t fit up the stairs. So its now sitting in my living room which is most annoying. I was so looking forward to sleeping in my own bed. So any suggestions on how to possibly manipulate to make it go up? The delivery guy suggested having a carpenter possibly cutting into the frame but not sure that’s a good idea since it might do long term damage. The other alternative is to get a comparable frame — which is the UK king that seems to come in 2 pieces. I don’t want to spend the money, but that might be my only option. But before doing that, I thought I would ask for suggestions. HELP!

  1. I would go with the new frame. It’s the cheapest alernative and easiest alternative. You can sell the old one or take it to a thrift shop. Or have a capenter build you a platform, with shelves underneath for storage.

  2. um, do u like being a little low? mattress on the box spring…box spring on the floor..frame out the door?

  3. If you don’t want to cut the bed frame, see if you can take the window out of the frame in your bedroom. If you can do this w/o damaging the house, it might be the easiest way to get the bed frame into your bedroom. I read an article about a carpenter in Washington D.C. who was an expert at cutting/reassembling furniture about a year ago. The furniture cutting business seems to be a growth industry.
I had a blast in England about 10 years ago … take the train using a cheapday ticket, if they still have that. I always went exploring for relatively little money. I always found that people were friendly — I went to a bar once and people bought me drinks just because I was American. Cheers!!!

  4. sounds like you will have to break down and get a new frame.

  5. I was going to suggest bringing it through a window, too. If you have a second floor window big enough it might be worth it – I’ve moved 3 beds this way. Obviously it’s too big to do alone, so a could helper option is a piano moving company.
I hope all is well with you and I’m still amazed at you for picking up and moving across thr Atlantic. We all can’t wait to hear more about your new life in England.

  6. We had to cut our fram to get it into our bedroom. We just made sure to cut the two sides at slightly different points.
Then, before assembling the bed, I went and got a couple of hinges from the hardware store. I used those and some wood screws to re-attach the two parts of the bed frame, and there we were.
It works, it is almost as rigid as it was before the cut, and it was a lot less hassle than buying new bed frames.

  7. Cut it in half and put hinges underneath, then you can fold it and get it in room and fold it to move it around also.
