Comments left re “Men On Down Low” Post

Last August, I posted a Washington Post article about men on the down low. The comments left have made for interesting reading. It also makes me realize that there are more people out there dealing with this issue than I initially imagined. Sort of sad, but I suppose that is the new reality. May it never be mine. It’s one thing to date someone who is openly bisexual but when the other person is being deceptive, that’s unforgiveable.

  1. There is a lengthy thread about this on nappturality.com in their forum area. It’s caused quite a few reactions, as could be expected. Especially since its taken from the view of black women, and black (secretly) bisexual men. The issue was also flared up by another thread about star jones and her “previously” bisexual fiance.

  2. alright the day before you posted this i was telling shasta, i think, how much i hate e. lynn harris and his books. i swear that i think almost every brutha i meet is gay, especially if they are in a fraternity. it’s all the man’s fault! i know it’s not a black thang, but i never imagined it until that documentary a few years ago.
i have a gf who has dated 3 gay men that i know of.. how sad is that? she has absolutely no gaydar. i went to her wedding just to make sure dude was straight.
it’s odd how we brought this up around the same time. there must be something in the air.

  3. Oh my — I had no idea Star Jones’ finance was allegedly “bisexual.” Yikes! If true, I think he’s just repressing those feelings. You just wait until they have a fight. Oh lord!

  4. I think it is appropriate and inaccurate to use the word bisexual when describing these men. They reject that label just as strongly as they would being called gay. The phenomenon of men on the dl is what happens when race and internalized homophobia collide.
As a black man who as always been out and always suffered at the hands of my so-called brothers, I have little sympathy for these men and a lot for the women and children whose lives they are destroying.

  5. It scares the heck outta me, who can we trust when it comes to wanna hang out with a brother, who just may have a brother topping him

  6. I can’t believe black men have sunk so low. I don’t have a problem with someone being gay. DL men can’t call themselves men, their cowards. I can’t respect a man who can’t stand up and say this is who I am. But you can have unprotected sex with another man not giving a thought that you could infect your wives with AIDs. DL men are worst than criminals because they leave nothing behind but crippinlig victims. You are killing our race, you are leaving children motherless. I hope that you are all confronted soon and just keep in mind you are gay, but on the real; your not good enough to be referred to as gay.
