Instant-Relay

Despite the fact that I'm close to watching my 20th soccer game in this year’s World Cup, I am by no means yet an expert when it comes to the rules. However, what is abundantly clear is that they need to institute instant replay for controversial goals and plays -- particularly in the knock-out stage. Considering that so much national pride is at stake, it seems stupid not to implement for fear it might disrupt the flow of the game.

I think it's so cool that you are getting so into the World Cup. It's really tough to get into here since all the games are during the day, but I had a chance to at least see half of all of the US games. But now, I'm rooting for England!

And you told me that you weren't a fan...

I'm jealous. I didn't even watch that many games. I would have loved to, but I was either too busy with work or far too interested in seeing Europe when the weather is nice (and it's been spectacular albeit a little hot over the last month) to sit in a cafe or restaurant and watch the games.

I agree with you on the replay. For one thing, it would or should put an end to all the insidious flopping that goes on in football. It's so easy for the players to fool the ref wih only the tiniest bit of acting skill. The Italians and te Portuguese are notorious, but the South Americans are not far off. It's really a shame, but there's nothing that can ruin a game faster than to see a player sent off with a red card for doing absolutely nothing to wit the Holland-Portugal match which was a travesty.

Anyway, it was good to watch the first couple of matches with you. Glad to see that you've become a fanatic. It's a great game and the remaining mathces (hopefully) should be excellent.
