Criminal Background Screening

| 4 Comments | No TrackBacks

True.com, an online dating service has started conducting criminal background screening on all applicants.

Before True™ members are allowed to communicate with you, they are screened by Rapsheets.com, one of the largest databases of criminal records on the Internet. Anyone with a U.S. felony or sexual offense conviction recorded in this database is prevented from communicating with you.

Unfotunately, not all states and jurisdictions are covered, but this is definitely a step in the right direction. Thinking other dating sites need to follow suit.

i'm not an online dating user, but what a terrific idea!

But what if you LIKE the "bad girl"-type?

Ex-cons need love, too!

I'm actually not against ex-cons being on any dating site. Everyone deserves their shot at love. However, since I'm paying for the privilege of meeting people, should I ever go back on another dating site, I want them to help me filter out people who don't meet my minimum standard. For me that means, those already married, those with criminal records and oh yeah, those with bad credit.

From Shasta:

I'd like some clarification: Are they only filtering out people that have been to jail? Are they filtering out people based on what they were convicted on? Do you have to do any jail time at all? Do they get filtered on having a police record?

As far as getting into people's financial history, yeah, I don't want to deal with anyone else's financial burdens either, but I consider this a grey area. If we allow this, why not try to get access to people medical histories to see if they have STDs or STIs, or other health issues that may hurt us or that we just don't
like/want to deal with? Exactly how far should we be allowed to go into someone's life without saying a word to them...and how do you justify going so far in one area, but not another?

How much right to privacy do we have?

And just because someone doesn't have a record, and stellar credit, doesn't mean that person couldn't have some other very serious and potentially threatening issues.
