I thought President Bush was against affirmative action or any type of quota system. As such, I'm a little baffled as to why he would choose someone to ascend to the highest court in the land who has no judicial experience. Oh don't get me wrong, I like the fact that he choose a woman, but for him to argue that Harriet Miers is "the best person I could find" insults our intelligence. She has never been a judge – not even in traffic court. And while that might be ok for some high level position – I don’t think it applies to someone who is going to sit on the Supreme Court. You need some experience. Not someone who is going to require on the job training. So in some way, it’s almost like President Bush is saying f*uck you to every judge who has paid their dues and worked their way up through the state and/or federal judicial system. And maybe, just maybe, he does support a quota system. After all, isn’t it about hiring unqualified minorities (that includes women by the way) for positions they don’t deserve? Wait -- don’t answer that.

I was hoping he would have chosen Janice Rogers Brown formerly of the California Supreme Court and now of the US Court of Appeals of the District of Columbia Circuit.
She's qualified, smart and was already confirmed by the Senate for the USCADCC.
If there is going to be a fight, she would have done just fine in the battle.
Stealth candidates with no records and no opinions about anything are no fun.
We want and need to have full-contact nomination hearings.

As much as I'd like to see a black woman become President, I could never support Condoleezza Rice. At least not at this point. Her political views on most issues to me are unkown, but considering the company she keeps, something tells me we are on opposite ends of the political spectrum.

For what it's worth, nearly 40% (41 of the 108) US Supreme Court justices have had no judicial experience. This includes the late William Renquist, who served on the Court from 1972 until he died this year.
Jim: Interesting statistics. But with the ever increasing importance of the Supreme Court, I think we need to look towards appointing those with a bit of judicial experience.
