History of Hawaii

I am embarrassed to say that I did not know that Hawaii before being annexed and then eventually becoming a part of these United States of America had a monarchy government. In fact, the last monarch, Queen Liliuokalani, was forced to surrender her kingdom and abdicate her thrown by an act of Congress. This I learned last Sunday while watching this fascinating documentary on the History Channel titled: Conquest of Hawaii. Heck, President Clinton even signed a bill passed by the 103rd congress "apologizing to Native Hawaiians on behalf of the United States for the overthrow of the Kingdom of Hawaii." So wondering, am I the only one who didn't know this? If so, shame on me for just knowing the year (1959) when Hawaii became the 50th state in the union and not much else.

Have you really never heard of King Kamehameha? You must never have been to Hawaii. He's everywhere. He's even in Congress. Check this out:

So, yes, we royally (literally) fucked over the Hawaiians, the same way we fucked over the Native Americans. It's no wonder that most Hawaiians hate Howlies like you and me.

Unfortunately no. I have never been to Hawaii. I was hoping to go there on my honeymoon, but don't think that's going to happen anytime soon. So perhaps I’ll need to rethink that strategy.

Interesting. Ive never known that. I did hear about a Queen Lakalakalaka (lol) but I did not know that....

I did know this. I did a state project on Hawaii in high school.

Don't feel bad you're not the only person who didn't know that. I like the History Channel because I ALWAYS learn something new. Even if it's on a subject that I'm familiar with.
