Smoking

Is it my imagination, or is smoking making a comeback with the 20something and 30something crowd? Sure it's normal to see quite a few smokers in bars, but there are smokers all around me in every day life. 3 of the 4 guys on my sales team all smoke. Never might some of the other young people at work in various departments I see out on smoke breaks. What is up with that? Do they not comprehend that smoking causes cancer and that its one of the main reasons why healthcare is so expensive in this country? Hmmm. Maybe they just don't care. We're all going to die eventually, right?

I know out West, especially in California, there seems to be LESS smokers, even amongst the younger crowd.

Maybe so...but why do they INSIST upon hurrying UP the process?

Ursula, you're right about smoking. In fact, one of our major promotions for HankFest is going to be matchbooks containing the logo and event information. We plan on leaving several thousand around the city at strategic locations.

I just had to respond to this one...I am a smoker in my 30's.

When I was in high school, I used this avenue as a means to rebel. I only smoked maybe 10 cigarettes in my entire senior year but I liked it because it gave me such a buzz.

Then, when I joined the military, I felt the need to rebel again because in Basic Training, they put you through, "Total Control" for 8 weeks. I won't even list off all the simple joys that we could not have. A fellow recruit managed to sneak cigarettes from the PX and we would smoke them in the showers, laughing at how we were getting away with it.

I sure showed them didn't I? I wish I had never started and now I pay for that.

Now it's a habit. I've tried three times in my life to quit and I'll tell ya, it's not that I don't care...it's just DAMN hard! Nicotine is a drug and a body goes through withdrawels when trying to quit.

All the nasty photos and commercials and doctors telling me what will happen; seeing people with voice boxes because they smoked, all that is not a strong opponent to those who already smoke. It may work on kids who have never smoked...so it should continue...but quitting smoking...like quitting any other drug, can bring a volley of excuses such as, like you pointed out, "I'm gonna die anyway..."

Cold Turkey really is the only way to go and someday, I will succeed.

Hello,

I too have noticed the smoking phenomenon among both the young and the old lately. I see people all the time sitting in outdoor cafes in Chicago just puffing away. I think they think that it is cool and sexy to smoke.
