Seeking Validation

Why is it that some people get ahead despite their less than stellar performance, when others who time and time again meet and exceed performance expectations get no satisfaction or validation? If anyone out there can explain this to me, I'd really appreciate you doing so. Your explanation might really prevent me from doing something I'm sure to regret tomorrow.
