Juneteenth Day

Today is Juneteenth Day. Go forth and celebrate.

Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration of the ending of slavery. From its Galveston, Texas origin in 1865, the observance of June 19th as the African American Emancipation Day has spread across the United States and beyond. Today Juneteenth commemorates African American freedom and emphasizes education and achievement. It is a day, a week, and in some areas a month marked with celebrations, guest speakers, picnics and family gatherings. It is a time for reflection and rejoicing. It is a time for assessment, self-improvement and for planning the future.

Something all of us could certainly be inspired by. Thanks for sharing!

Amen. I hope none of us ever forgets.

One of my closest friends lives in Houston and he has posted about Junteenth today in his "Not A Native Texan" kind of way.

Of course, he has been known to make things up.

The Old Town School of Folk Music is having a Juneteenth Celebration this entire weekend.

"Come on down for the Saturday night Juneteenth Concert featuring Maggie Brown and Malachi Thompson's Africa Brass, then come back for free on Sunday (with your ticket stub) for a Juneteenth Family Day event filled with music, dance and theater performances and workshops, as well as great food and an African marketplace."

As with everything at the OTS, I'm sure it will be great!
