Pitch Fever for Chelsea FC

Earlier this month, I made the following declaration on Twitter: Despite the fact that I've yet to attend one of their games, after careful consideration, I do hereby pledge my allegiance the @chelseafc! — Ursula Petula Barzey (@UrsulaBarzey) February 3, 2014 Why @chelseafc, well they are London based and owned by a billionaire. What's not to love? lol — Ursula Petula Barzey (@UrsulaBarzey) February 3, 2014 With that, here's hoping that José Mourinho and the boys in blue don't break my heart too often. — Ursula Petula Barzey (@UrsulaBarzey) February 3, 2014 Now the billionaire bit probably makes me seem […]

Funeral Selfies

Yesterday on a friend’s Facebook page was an article discussing the proliferation of selfies, even at funerals. This one written by a funeral director was actually defending the practice which I find totally vulgar. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not against selifes or even photographs being taken at a funeral particularly as they often bring together family and friends who haven’t seen each other in years, perhaps decades. Come a Little Closer

For the last few months I can’t get Rihanna’s song Stay (feat. Mikky Ekko) out of head. Strangely, I’m not thinking about a particular guy when I hear this song. It’s more to do with the general desire to be in a committed relationship. I know this is natural, but I’d really like to be content with myself. Most days I am, but some days like today, I’m not as I’m starting to find it exhausting to go through life alone. Sure one can be self-sufficient, but it would be good to have someone around who provides unconditional love and […]

Gentrification

Making the rounds is audio of Spike Lee giving a passionate response to a question on gentrification and whether or not it is a good thing. This for me isn’t an easy question to answer as no doubt the additional services and increase in property value is great for those own, but those left renting are often displaced. Heck, in 2001 after I left LexisNexis in Chicago, I considered moving back to Boston so I could be closer to family. I went so far as to secure a new job with a major publisher. However, didn’t end up moving back […]

Ray of Sunshine

Earlier today I stumbled across the photograph below of a Japanese grandma with her pooch perched on her back. The photo was taken by her granddaughter for a photography book titled Miyoko Ihara: Misao the Big Mama and Fukumaru the Cat. This photograph along with some of the others reminded me of summers spent as a young child with Nenen in Montserrat. She worked the land which was backbreaking but she was cheerful through it all. She loved the outdoors and really relished the opportunity to make her living that way. However, she wanted us to better ourselves and so […]
